I agree with Luke that the scheduling of the debate on Friday night was not a wise decision. Some folks have the privilege of staying home from their usual Friday evening activities but it would be quite difficult for parents of the featured soloist in the band, the star football player or the cheerleader who is their child at the game tonight! Loved your dad, you seem to have that great regular guy quality that he did. As for the debate, they should have scheduled it at 5pm pacific time on Sunday. That way people could watch the debate while they eat dinner and would still be able to catch the rest of the nfl after the debate.

Regarding your last question, I have to disagree. While I do agree that putting the first debate on a Friday night was ultimately a stupid decision, I think that there has to be a Commission like this in order to establish certain rules for the debate which the two candidates' campaigns have worked out every little intricate detail of. To leave this up to the people would undoubtedly lead to chaos and boycotts from candidates who do not get to debate the way they want. Frankly, I don't have faith that the American people know what to push for in debate planning anyway...

1) Jim Lehrer is a good reporter because he works for a network which is not about ratings, but about content. I am confident in his ability to steer the debate in the direction of both - the global economy as it relates to foreign policy.

I've put this evening aside for weeks now.
I honestly thought McCains' antics were a precursor to him proposing the elections be postponed due to the economic 'crisis'.
In addition, I do believe he realizes the mistake in adding Palin to the ticket, but to flip flop on that would look - desperate and ill-thought out.
But at 54, I am rather cynical about Republican strategies.
I saw the stealing of the election in 2000, and 2004.
As much as I and my colleagues here in California were ANGRY along with a lot of americans, we were powerless to do anything.
This year is different, and as much as McCain enjoys photo ops to possibly show his involvment in this bailout, the truth is, he had virtually nothing to do with it. In fact, his appearance mucked up the works.

Yes, you are young and naive. McCain never really expected that he'd be able to duck this debate. It was just a way to create hoopla around his non-suspension of the campaign.

Instead of having the media run clips of him and Obama and surrogates debating economic philosophy - on which he was getting his head handed to him - he had a few days of everyone debating whether his presence on Washington was helpful, whether the debate would happen, and what "suspending" his campaign meant. There is part of me that says "ordinary citizens" should be involved in the process. I think it would certainly be less predictable than most debates. There is certainly a downside; a lot of "ordinary citizens" don't necessarily know how to "play the game," and do it fairly. Although, many say that about the media as well. If that were the case, you would still need some discernment as to who these "ordinary citizens" were so that it would be worth everyone's time.

I believe McCain has had several "senior" moments in the last month, and his team of experts have dropped the ball in the end zone at least five times.

McCAIN is the elitist who is so out of touch he needs to pull a high risk stunt out of his bag of tricks. I thought McCain's suggestion of a series of town hall type meetings was one of the most refreshing political ideas in recent years. I'll watch the "debate" tonight, but I don't like these overly controlled, formula shows-- not debates by any stretch of the imagination. I am bothered that the Commission on Presidential Debates is the only organization responsible for what is such an imperative part of our election cycle. Yes, the claim is it is a nonpartisan group, but in reality it was formed by the two major parties so they could have more control over how their candidates came across. It is an insult to democracy that they refuse to allow certain candidates to participate because of poll numbers. Every candidate that has made it on the ballot should be given the opportunity to make their case so that the people are aware of their choices.

As far as letting ordinary citizens have a greater say, it would be difficult to achieve. Personally I think a true townhall type meeting would be informative to watch. And I don't mean one where participants are screened or questions are chosen beforehand. This would ensure the candidates are addressing concerns of actual voters, not what some moderator percieves the story of the day is. And while I'm on the topic of moderators, wouldn't it be fantastic if they made them answer the question they are asked? If they try to change the subject or give a vague response bring them back to it and/or ask for clarification. Don't let them get away with doing nothing more than spewing talking points!!

I agree that whoever scheduled the debates for Friday night needs a lesson in media programming. As a college student who is following this election closely and excited to vote for the first time, I was disappointed that the debate was held on a Friday night when I had a friend coming to visit for the weekend. (my friend did not travel to Miami to sit in my apartment watching TV)

Luckily, CSPAN posted the debate in its entirety on YouTube so I was able to watch it on Sunday. Obviously people who are interested enough will stay home on Friday or TiVo or YouTube, but I think the timing is missing a lot of moderately interested people who would tune in if it were a weekday. I predict the Vice-Presidential debate on Thursday will get more viewers than any of the Presidential debates (which spells disaster for the GOP).

Anyway, I think that there should be a more democratic process involved with determining when and where debates are held. The system should be designed to best inform the public (aka voters).

And truth be told, I wish it were your dad who were moderating the debates. I had the chance to see and hear him speak in person once and was beyond impressed. You seem to be doing a great job following in his footsteps!

Do you think we'll see the day when LCD monitors are replaced by holographic displays? Screens that literally appear out of thin air in full color?

What do you think? Holographic technology is still fairly new but there are scientists out there who believe we've only begun to tap into it.

There are also people working on holographic based cloaking devices for use in combat. In 10 years we could be looking back on the technology of today and laughing.
